Sustainability Literacy

Amanda Richman - Fanshawe College

Hi everyone,
I am wondering if you can let me know if you have done a sustainability literacy assessment at your College/University as per STARS. I am looking for some guidance to develop one for Fanshawe and also look at how other colleges dealt with the reassessment of the same cohort. Since we have a short turn around, were you able to get decent feedback for a reassessment?

Thanks so much for all of your input.

Hi Amanda,

Humber hasn’t done any literacy assessment to date. But if we were to, we may look to aligning it with the attached assessment that is worldwide.  The short explanation is that there are a number of institutions that have been working on a literacy assessment that could be done worldwide to allow for greater comparisons across countries, etc.  It is in a pilot stage, and you will see that there are currently no questions for the Canadian context yet, but there are some Canadian institutions that have registered. And institution is being asked to contribute Canadian questions if they like.  I haven’t had the chance to share this with OCUSP yet, so your email is timely.

I guess there are two things for you in this:
      1)      You could look at the pilot literacy test as it is now and see if you’d like to use some of the current questions
       2)      You could also consider contributing some questions from a Canadian context (and anyone from OCUSP could do that!)

Hopefully this is helpful. You can also contact the folks that sent these emails to find out more as that is the basic understanding I have on it at this time.

Hello Amanda
We have a very quick and dirty assessment that we have done here at uOttawa. It doesn’t give much depth but it gives you a very good idea of what people know about basic environmental sustainability issues.
You’ll see the same survey twice in this attachment.
