Hi everyone,
Conestoga is going through a library reno and will be
purging nearly 10 000 books. I’ve explored the World Book Exchange
however, our publication dates are too old; most books are 15 years old at
minimum. Organizations like the Canadian Book Exchange are accepting
books but are flat and out recycling them since the need for library books is
minimal.
We do not have storage capacity for these books, so they
must go as they are pulled from the shelves. Normal book discard options, such
as selling, or setting up free book stands are also not an option due to lack
of space and the pace with which we need to move these books.
Does anyone have knowledge of organizations that we could
donate these books to? Our only viable option at this moment is to
recycle them, but reuse would be preferable.
Much thanks,

Hey Jana,
Contact your local charities…i.e. rotary club, royal Canadian
legions…the ones in London regularly send shipping containers to Africa and
Haiti filled with stuff, I am sure you will have some that do the same in your
area? Also, call the local school boards and find out who they send their
used books to…they will likely have someone set up to look after it.
Worth a “look see”! J
Cheers, ML

Hi Jana,
Sounds like you might have some very tight timelines, but we’ve used
Better World Books with some success at Queen’s. Once set up with them,
they provide courier shipping labels to forward our collected books
along. We generally have a steady flow of materials going out, so I am
not sure how this would translate into a large volume in one go.
Cheers!
Aaron

Hi Jana,
We have a bin in the library for
an organization, Textbooks for Change, where donations can be accepted. http://textbooksforchange.com/
The organization we used when we
did our major purge was Better World Books. We set up an account
with them, they provided all the boxes, mailing labels and picked up the boxes
when we called them. In turn, they either recycled them, or put them on
their website to re-sell . We receive a small cheque monthly for any of our
books they re-sell. It’s not a big money maker, but it keeps them out of
the landfill. http://www.betterworldbooks.com/
Thanks,
Gina
