Environmental Standards for Paints

Stephanie Foster - George Brown College - 12.02.2015

Hi All, We are in the process of updating the College's Green Purchasing Guidelines for Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment which includes a section for Paints and Coatings.

We are considering whether to specify in this guideline  that any interior paints meet the limitations set out by Green Seal Standard-11 for Paints and Coatings.  However, this standard was recently revised and updated and is quite stringent in terms increasing the list of prohibited chemicals that can be in the products. From what I can see only 2 Canadian manufacturers can meet this standard.

My question is this: have any of you set similar standards? If so, did you include any other guidelines apart from Green Seal, such as Green Guard, CHPS and/or the Master Painters Institute Green Performance Standard?

Thanks for any insights. - Stephanie

What about Canada’s Eco Logo, also known as Environmental Choice, Standard?

You might also consider recycled paints…..particularly for back of house areas where specific colour may not be as high a priority.

Here’s one company to consider:  http://www.peintureboomerang.com/en/
