Hey OCUSP- happy hump day!
I received a request for any knowledge about what
systems/programs other universities have in place to ensure the re-use of
large, unique, university-owned property. (a prime example being fume
hoods – the kind of thing that many groups on campus might use, but not the sort
of thing you can simply take to the swap shop - which we have for furniture and
supplies.) The current suggestion is for campus to have a kijiji-like
website for university staff to post items needed/for reuse.
Does anyone have any other ideas, or experience creating an
online system that would connect interested parties?
Many thanks for any thoughts.

At the recommendation of Paul Caruso we did this last year with some
good results. check out the article and the actual web page - tip -
to get it up and running I sent the info to every Admin/executive assistant on
campus - they are the ones who deal with this stuff. it worked
well. we have found new homes for tables, chairs, fridges, a piano, lab
equipment, etc etc

At last year’s AASHE conference, I ran into a company called Campus Wall
(http://mycampuswall.com/) that provides
this service. I received an email from them in January – looks like they
are actively looking to expand into Canada by end of February. It’s not
something I’m currently looking at, but it could be useful!
The contact I have is Tina Snyder, tina@campuswall.com.
Hope that helps!

Hi Lauren,
Queen’s has
an on-line exchange database through Intuit called Freecycle@work.
The system is exclusive to the campus community (must have an @queensu.ca
email) and serves both as an alternative to purchasing new items and as waste
diversion tool.
The
application can also be used by students, staff and faculty to exchange
personal assets as long as they are identified as such during the listing
process. Any institutional assets listed for a period longer than six months
can be released to individuals for personal use (release waiver is signed).
The current
membership base has grown to 657 users and the site is being promoted through
the Sustainability Office and Procurement as the starting point for all
departmental furnishing/equipment needs.
Cheers,
Llynwen
