Sustainability Staff

Taryn Wilkinson - Niagara College (2014.01.10)

Hi Everyone,
We are currently assessing at our staffing needs in regards to sustainability and we are wondering what other colleges and universities have in terms of sustainability staff. How many people do you have in sustainability related roles, titles, level (management, support staff, faculty, etc), and whether they are full time or part time. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and we would be happy to share what we find! Thank you,
Taryn

Aaron Ball - Queen's University (2014.01.10)

Hi Taryn,
The Sustainability Office at Queen’s is staffed as follows:
1 FTE – Sustainability Manager
1FTE – Waste Coordinator
1 FTE – Energy Engineer
The Waste Coordinator and Energy Engineer are both legacy Physical Plant Services positions that were rolled into the office.  Both positions still have large operational components to them.  I would say that roughly 50% of each position’s time is still directed towards an operations role.
Cheers!

Kate Whelan - McMaster University (2014.01.14)

Hi Taryn,
At Mac, there is me (Senior Manager, University Sustainability & Director, Sustainable Future Program) and one student who is 10 hours during the year and full-time during the summer (Coordinator, University Sustainability).

The model here is very focused on forming collaborations with the various operational departments (procurement, transportation, facilities, HR etc.), which means I do very little operationally and function more as a facilitator. The large majority of my job is focused on sustainability education in the academy (Sustainable Future Program, Minor in Sustainability, Sustainability Internship Program etc).
Hope this helps,
Kate

Chelsea Dalton - UofT Mississauga (2014.01.15)

Hi Taryn,
Here at UTM we have:
1 full-time Environmental/Sustainability Coordinator
8 work-study students during the year, 4 during summer

There are also several units that have a partial responsibility for sustainability (for example, Parking & Transportation is responsible for most alternative transportation programs), but I’m not sure how much of their time is dedicated to sustainability (many of these programs are self-sustaining).
I hope this helps!

Dianne Corrigan - Georgian College (2014.01.15)

Hello Taryn:  At Georgian we are undergoing organizational renewal and are assessing staffing needs as well.  The Sustainability Coordinator role has evolved from a part-time admin/academic secondment role to a full-time admin secondment role and is now back to a part-time (2 days/week) administrative role during this period of transition.  I am not sure where it will eventually land  - possibly in Physical Resources but the compilation of everyone's responses to your question will be useful data to consider.

Claire Bennett - Laurier University (2014.01.15)

Hi Taryn,
One Sustainability Coordinator at Laurier as well. The position sits within Physical Resources and receives significant funding for capital projects for this depts (and smaller amounts from others) but the position and sustainability ops budget is student funded.

Paul Henshaw - Windsor (2014.01.17)

Taryn,
It's a difficult question to answer. In terms of positions related directly to sustainability, there is only me: a faculty member seconded into the role of "Environmental Advocate" in exchange for half teaching load. So in theory that means that 20% of my time is spent on sustainability.

However, at the managerial level, our Manager of Custodial Services & Grounds is the one who administers all aspects recycling on campus. He estimates that 20-30% of his time is devoted to that. There is also the Manager of Facilities Planning, Construction and Renovations who spends a little (2-3% by his estimate) of his time on energy efficiency work.

Of course, beyond that, there are the custodians who collect the recycle, controls technicians who make sure that the energy management systems are working, etc. It would be hard to quantify those efforts.
