Bus Shelters

Becky MacWhirter - Loyalist College - 12.12.2014
Hi all,

To enhance transit services, Loyalist is considering upgrading our bus shelters. The idea of bus shelter advertising came up as a possible means to pay for it...debate ensued. Do any of your institutions use advertising to offset the cost of “sustainability” projects? One option discussed to make it more palatable would be to restrict advertisements to those that meet strict guidelines (e.g. no advertisements for tobacco products, credit cards, etc.).

Thoughts?

Also, do any of your campuses have solar bus shelters and if so, do you have information on reliability, cost, etc.?

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Hi Becky,

Here at UTM we upgraded our bus shelter over the summer, the shelter is now enclosed and heated.  It was something the students were really pushing for after the long, cold winter we had last year.  There are radiant heaters inside the shelter, if the temperature is below 0 and a button is pushed, the heaters come on for 5 minutes and then automatically shut off.

I can pass along the contact info for the project manager if you’re interested, he will have more info re costs and such.  We currently do not have ads on the shelter and I am pretty sure it was not looked at as a funding mechanism.
